Create Windows Desktop Shortcuts

Shortcuts are icons you use to quickly access files, folders, or programs from your desktop screen.   

Note: On a University computer, your desktop is not saved to your H: drive, so desktops are machine-specific. Adding a shortcut to the desktop on one computer will not make it show up on another computer.

To Create a Shortcut:

  1. In the lower-left corner of your screen, click the Windows [Start] button.    
  2. Click "All Prgorams" > "Novell ZENworks" > "ZENworks Application Windows."
  3. Locate the program in the associated CedarNet folder.
  4. Drag and drop the program icon to your Desktop.

To Rename a Shortcut:

You cannot rename shortcuts created with this method.

To Delete a Shortcut:

To delete a shortcut, you must manually drag the icon to the Recycle Bin or highlight the shortcut and click the [Delete] key.

To Create a Shortcut:

  1. In the lower-left corner of your screen, click the Windows [Start] button.  
  2. From the "Recently added" side panel, click the folder "Novell ZENworks" > "ZENworks Application Windows."
  3. From the resulting diaglogue box, locate the program in the associated CedarNet folder.
  4. Drag and drop the program icon to your Desktop.

To Rename a Shortcut:

You cannot rename shortcuts created with this method.

To Delete a Shortcut:

To delete a shortcut, you must manually drag the icon to the Recycle Bin or highlight the shortcut and click the [Delete] key. 

Create and Manage All Other Shortcuts (documents, files, folders, and locally installed programs)

To Create a Shortcut:

  1. In the lower-left corner of your screen, click the Windows [Start] button.
  2. Right-click the file, folder, or program for which you would like to create a shortcut.
  3. Select "Send to" > "Desktop (create shortcut)." The shortcut will appear on your Windows Desktop screen. 

To Rename a Shortcut:

  1. To rename a shortcut, right-click the shortcut > Select "Rename."
  2. Enter the new name of the shortcut into the highlighted field, and then press [Enter].

To Delete a Shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select "Delete."
