Problems with the Self-Service Course Catalog

As of May 2025, Cedarville is planning to begin a full Online Undergraduate program in the fall semester.  These students will be designated as UGO.  UGO students will have separate course sections from residential students.  Residential students cannot register for UGO sections, and UGO students cannot register for residential sections.  Complicating matters is the possibility of residential sections being offered online.  We can't just differentiate just on Online/Not online. In addition, CSP(Christian School Partnership) sections are listed in the catalog as online classes.

Problems identified

  1. The self-service course catalog lists all sections regardless of student type. Any student searching for a particular course will see sections for residential, online, CSP, and UGO.
    • As any type of student, this can be confusing if you do not know what type of section to register for.
    • This can make the list of sections quite long, as in the case of GBIO-1000, with >30 sections shown.
  2. No filter is available to look for or remove UGO sections
    • An UGO student will need to scroll through all the other sections to find the Z-section
    • A residential student will see the UGO Z-sections and may accidentally select them.
  3. CSP sections and locations are shown alongside standard sections
    • Confusing to all students as they see locations and sections that mean nothing to them.
  4. CSP locations are shown on the Location filter, and there is no option available for a standard(on-premise) or online (non-CSP) location
    • Location filter is useless to Residential and UGO students.
  5. Residential students can add a UGO section (z-section) to their schedule with no warning or indication that they shouldn't do that.  An error won't be thrown until after they attempt to actually register for that section.
    • Might be a rare occurrence, but could be frustrating to the residential student.
  6. Searching for the word "Online" in the search box will return any course that has that word in the description, or location
    • Unknown how often, but conceivable that a UGO student would enter 'online' into the search box.  Theoretically this search would return sections that are online, but this is not the case.
  7. There is no way to save searches or filters, no way to define default or preset searches or filters
    • This is an inherent limitation of the software.
  8. In advanced search, Course Type does not include online or UGO
    • Conceivable that a student would search for courses that match their student type. Also conceivable as an instruction to all UGO students, as in "Always select course type UGO when adding sections to your schedule"
  9. Selecting Online in location yields no results
    • Probably not many students attempting to use this, but it could be helpful to have it as a location
  10. Selecting Main Campus in location yields no results
    • Probably not many students attempting to use this, but it could be helpful to have it as a location.
    • This also would add "Main Campus" to the location description in the section listing
  11. Instruction Type filter is limited to Online / Not Online
    • Confusing as both residential online and UGO sections are considered and listed as "online".
  12. Course Type options are limited
    • Currently only General Education and Global Awareness are used for Fall 2025
    • Adding a course type for UGO could be beneficial
  13. Topics filter is empty
    • If this is not to be used, then it should be removed.
    • It could be used as the filter between residential and UGO, if course type is not used
