1Password Enterprise FAQ

Q: I don't feel comfortable putting my passwords in the cloud. Doesn't that make them more vulnerable?

A: Your 1Password vault is encrypted at all times, even before it leaves your device, and it’s completely inaccessible to anyone else—including employees at 1Password.
1Password takes security seriously. To sign in, you’ll go through CU’s standard Duo Two-Factor Authentication, and you’ll also need to confirm the login from another device where you’ve already signed in—adding an extra layer of protection.

Q: How does 1Password help me be more secure?

A: It prevents password reuse by helping you create a unique password for every site. It can securely generate long, complex random passwords with just a click.
It will also alert you if any of your passwords are weak, reused, or known to be compromised in a data breach.

Q: How will I be able to remember all these long, complex passwords?

A: You won’t need to! 1Password remembers them for you and can automatically fill them in on the correct websites using the 1Password browser extension.

Q: What if I'm not at my computer?

A: 1Password works across platforms—you can use it through browser extensions, mobile apps, desktop apps, or by logging in via the web. Once you're set up, you’ll have access from all your devices.

Q: What kinds of things should I store in 1Password?

A: You can store more than just passwords! 1Password is great for saving secure notes, software licenses, Wi-Fi credentials, bank accounts, private keys, and any other sensitive info you need to keep safe and accessible.

Q: Can I use 1Password for personal stuff too?

A: Yes! As part of your CU 1Password Enterprise account, you get a completely separate 1Password Families license—for free. It’s yours to use for as long as you’re employed at CU, and it includes access for you and up to four family members. Your personal and family info is totally separate from your work account.

Q: Will anyone at CU be able to see my passwords?

A: Nope! Your personal vault and your Employee vault are private—only you can access them.
Shared vaults are used for passwords or credentials that need to be accessed by your team. Only those with explicit permission can view or use the items inside a shared vault.

Q: What happens if I leave the university?

A: Your CU 1Password account will be deactivated, and you'll lose access to any shared or work-related vaults.
If you’re using 1Password Families, you’ll have the option to convert it to a personal paid plan, so you don’t lose access to your saved items.

Q: Is 1Password hard to use?

A: Not at all! Once you’ve signed in and set up the browser extension, 1Password will offer to save and fill your logins automatically. It’s designed to be simple and helpful, and most people get comfortable with it very quickly.

Q: What if I forget how to log into 1Password or get locked out?

A: If you get locked out, no worries—just contact IT using the information at the bottom of this page. We can help you recover your account in a few minutes.

Q: Is using 1Password really better than saving passwords in my browser?

A: Yes, absolutely. 1Password is built from the ground up for secure password management. It includes strong encryption, breach detection, password health checks, and secure sharing—features your browser just can’t match. Plus, it works across devices and browsers, so you're not tied to one ecosystem.
