Open a Password-Protected Zip File

Windows supports opening .Zip files natively and extracting them to your filesystem.

However, sometimes sensitive data (e.g. data with Personally Identifiable Information in it regarding student Financial Aid) will be sent in a password-protected .zip file.

Windows doesn't know how to deal with these files, and will display an error about failing to copy the file when attempting to extract the .zip file.

To open, password-protected .zip files:

  1. On your University-provided computer, open Company Portal (also called Software Center), and search for "7-Zip".
  2. Install 7-Zip from Company Portal
  3. From your start menu, search for and launch "7-Zip File Manager"
  4. Navigate to the .zip file that you'd like to extract.
  5. Right-click, and choose "Extract"
  6. Enter the password to decrypt the zip file.
