Troubleshooting

I don't see Add-ins

  1. Make sure you're on the Home tab.
  2. Make sure your Excel/PowerPoint is updated.
  3. Confirm you're signed in to your account.

ChatGPT installed but won't open

  1. Close Excel/PowerPoint completely and reopen.
  2. Open a workbook and try the same steps to open.

Can't sign into Chat in Application

  1. Make sure your Excel/PowerPoint and Chat are logged in to the same account
    • Ex: Your Excel is Cedarville but Chat signed into your personal account.

Other General Tips

  • If ChatGPT isn't listed, suspect a Microsoft 365/organization restriction.
  • If ChatGPT is listed but won't open, test PowerPoint for the web.
  • If it opens but won't sign in, check the ChatGPT account and SSO.
  • If you get "This add-in could not be started," involve your Microsoft/OpenAI administrator and have them check the organization's SSO configuration.

Excel-Specific

Chat doesn't understand my workbook

  1. Be explicit and detailed in your prompts.
    • (E.g. Analyze the "January Data" sheet only. Do not modify anything. Explain the formulas in columns H through M.)
    • For changes: Update the formulas in column M to use the values in column L. Do not change formatting or any other cells.

PowerPoint-Specific

Chat can't edit my presentation

  1. Start simple. (E.g. β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹Analyze this presentation and tell me what you can change.)
  2. Gradually ask more. (E.g. Add one title slide. Do not change any existing slides.)
  3. For large edits, ask for a plan. (E.g. Before editing the deck, tell me which slides you would change and why. Do not make changes yet.)

The formatting doesn't match my template

  1. Use prompts like the following for creation:
    • Match the existing deck's fonts, spacing, title treatment, colors, and layout conventions. Do not introduce a new visual style.
  2. For specific slides:
    • Use slide 4 as the visual reference. Create the new slide using the same layout, typography, spacing, and formatting.
