ChatGPT: Migrate Custom GPTs to Plugins
OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs in ChatGPT Enterprise on December 11, 2026 and transitioning these workflows to Plugins.
If you currently use or have created a custom GPT, your GPT will continue to work during the transition period. However, you will need to migrate any GPT you want to continue using before December 11.
What Is Changing
Custom GPTs let you create a customized version of ChatGPT with specific instructions, knowledge, and files.
Plugins are the next step. They can use those same types of instructions and knowledge while also providing more ways for ChatGPT to work with tools, information, and connected apps.

You will no longer be able to create new custom GPTs. Existing GPTs can still be used. |

Custom GPTs will stop working. GPTs you want to continue using should be migrated or rebuilt and tested before this date. |
Prepare for the Transition - What should I do now?
- Identify the custom GPTs you currently maintain.
- Decide which GPTs are still useful and need to be kept.
- Watch for the Migrate to plugin option in ChatGPT.
- Migrate the GPTs you want to keep.
- Test the new plugin to make sure it works as expected.
- Complete the transition before December 11, 2026.
Note: Creation of new custom GPTs is scheduled to end September 25, 2026. Consider the upcoming transition before creating a new custom GPT.
How Do I Migrate My GPT?
Beginning with the planned rollout on September 17, GPT creators may see a Migrate to plugin option in ChatGPT.
When this option is available for your GPT, use it to begin converting the GPT into a plugin.
OpenAI has provided early guidance for transitioning GPTs to plugins.
Because OpenAI is continuing to develop the migration experience, additional instructions and resources may become available during the transition period.
What Is a Plugin?
A plugin is a way to give ChatGPT additional instructions, knowledge, and capabilities for a particular task or workflow.
For example, a plugin could help ChatGPT follow instructions specific to your department or perform a repeatable workflow. Plugins can also work with supported connected apps and tools when those connections have been approved and made available.
Think of a plugin as the newer way of creating and using that type of customized ChatGPT experience.
