Sync Department Folders and Shared Libraries in OneDrive

Cedarville University Information Technology recommends using the Microsoft OneDrive Sync Client to allow you to access your department folders and shared libraries from your computer. 

Add Shortcut for a Shared Library or Folder

When someone shares a folder in Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams, you can add a shortcut to the shared folder in your OneDrive to easily find and work with the files. These shortcuts appear in OneDrive on the web, Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder, Teams, and in the OneDrive mobile apps.

To add a Shortcut to a folder from OneDrive

  1. In a browser, navigate to OneDrive on the web.
  2. From the left-hand sidebar, select the shared library you'd like to sync files from. 
    OR
    For shared folders, select "Shared" from the left-hand sidebar to view the folders that have been shared with you. 
  3. Find the folder you want to add, and click the circle in the folder's tile to select it.
    Note: you can choose any folder or subfolder to sync. 
  4. Select Add shortcut to My files or Add shortcut to OneDrive.
  5. Repeat these steps for each folder you want to sync to your OneDrive.

To Add a Shortcut to a Folder from Teams:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams using the application or go online to http://teams.microsoft.com.
    • When prompted, use your full Cedarville University email address then continue with the standard sign-in process.
  2. On the left, select Teams.
  3. Click the name of the team you want to sync (e.g., InfoTech).
  4. Click the name of the channel you want to sync (e.g., General).
  5. On the top, select Files.
  6. Find the folder you want to add, and click the circle in the folder's tile to select it.
  7. Select Add shortcut to OneDrive.  You may need to click the 3 dots in the menu bar to see that option.
  8. Repeat these steps for each folder you want to sync to your OneDrive.

To Open an Existing Shortcut from OneDrive:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder.
  2. On the left, select OneDrive - Cedarville University.
  3. Select the folder you added above.

To Remove an Existing Shortcut from OneDrive:

  1. Open My files using OneDrive on the web.
  2. Find the folder you want to remove, and click the circle in the folder's tile to select it.
  3. Select Remove.

Follow a Shared Library (Mobile Devices)

Mobile Devices using the OneDrive app (Android | iOS) or the Office app (Android | iOS) can only see folders that you are "following". Use the instructions below to follow a specific shared library: 

  1. Navigate to the web version Microsoft Teams using a web browser or using the Microsoft Teams App.
    When prompted for an email address, enter your full Cedarville University email address, and then proceed through the normal sign-in process. 
  2. From the left sidebar, click "Teams"
  3. Click the name of the shared library or department folder you would like to sync.
  4. Select the "General" channel from the listing of channels on the left.
  5. Click the "Files" tab near the top of the screen
  6. Select "Open in SharePoint" 
  7. In the upper right-hand corner of the screen click the star next to the words "Not following". 
  8. This will "follow" the team so that you will be able to access it directly from Microsoft mobile apps.
