Change Membership of a Team or Private Channel (Managers Only)

Use the following instructions to add/remove a person from a Microsoft Team or Private Channel.

Important: In order to add someone to a Private Channel, they must first be added to the Team. 

Add/Remove a Person on a Microsoft Team

First, you'll need to navigate to the Team Membership area in Microsoft Teams:

  1. Launch your Teams Client, or navigate to Teams on the Web.
  2. Sign in with your Cedarville University email address & password if you are prompted to do so.
  3. From the left-hand sidebar, select Teams. 
  4. Select the name and icon of the team you'd like to modify.
  5. Select the 3-dot menu to the right of the team name. 
  6. Select Manage Team.

To add a member:

  1. Click the purple Add Member button in the upper right-hand corner.
    (Note: if this doesn't exist, you may not be an owner of the Team)
  2. In the search bar, search for the first name, last name, or email address of the person you'd like to add. 
  3. Select the correct person from the list of search results
  4. Select Add
  5. The person you added will get an email indicating that they've been added to your team. They will be able to see the Team in Microsoft Teams, and view files in that Team's SharePoint Site. 

To remove a member:

  1. Expand the members and guests area near the bottom of the page
  2. Find the person you'd like to remove from the Team
  3. Select the on the right-hand side of the screen, in line with their name. 
  4. The person you've removed will not be notified, but they will no longer belong to the team, and no longer have permissions to see files stored in that Team's SharePoint site.

Add/Remove a Member on a Private Channel in a Microsoft Team:

First, you'll need to navigate to the channel Membership area in Microsoft Teams:

  1. Launch your Teams Client, or navigate to Teams on the Web.
  2. Sign in with your Cedarville University email address & password if you are prompted to do so.
  3. From the left-hand sidebar, select Teams. 
  4. Select the name and icon of the team you'd like to modify.
  5. Select the 3-dot menu to the right of the channel name that you'd like to modify
    (Note: You may need to hover your mouse over the channel name for the 3 dots to appear)
  6. Select Manage Channel

To add a member to a Private Channel:

  1. Click the purple Add Member button in the upper right-hand corner.
    (Note: if this doesn't exist, you may not be an owner of the Private Channel)
  2. In the search bar, search for the first name, last name, or email address of the person you'd like to add. 
  3. Select the correct person from the list of search results
  4. Select Add
  5. The person you added will now be a member of that channel. They will be able to see the private channel in Microsoft Teams, and view files in that private channel's SharePoint Site.

To remove a member of a Private Channel:

  1. Expand the members and guests area near the bottom of the page
  2. Find the person you'd like to remove from the Team
  3. Select the on the right-hand side of the screen, in line with their name. 
  4. The person you've removed will not be notified, but they will no longer be able to see this private channel, and no longer have permissions to see files stored in that private channel's SharePoint site.
