Windows 11: Getting Started

Windows 11 is the latest operating system from Microsoft. The purpose of this help page is to provide information and training resources for Windows 11.

Windows 11 upgrades will begin on April 9. The initial effort will be to upgrade Windows laptops only before they potentially leave campus with their owner following commencement. If there are any issues, it will make it much easier to provide assistance if the computer is still on campus.  Office desktops, labs and classroom computers will be upgraded throughout the summer.

What does the upgrade process look like?

The upgrade process will be initiated remotely by IT personnel on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No one will need to come to your office for the upgrade. See the schedule below for the date when your department is to be upgraded. You may continue using your computer while the upgrade process runs. You will then be prompted to restart your computer. You can choose to restart it then or delay until later, such as when leaving for the day. If you wish to wait until the end of the day, before you leave go ahead and click on the update notification in the lower right-hand corner of your screen and select to restart now. Your computer will be ready for use the next morning.  Just make sure the computer stays connected to the network throughout the upgrade process and has a power source. This means leaving it connected to your dock or power cord, with the lid open. After the upgrade has completed, which can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes after the reboot, you should be able to login as usual.

If you encounter any issues following the upgrade, please call or text 937-766-7905, or submit a ticket.

Note: Desktops and laptops that have a CU barcode sticker with a number that starts with "45" will not be upgraded since they will be replaced this summer.

Training Resources

Microsoft provides a good overview of what's new in Windows 11.  Here are some other areas that might be of interest:

  • Changes in the Windows 11 Start Menu
  • Changes in the file explorer context menu
  • Decluttering your workspace by using multiple desktops
  • To dig a little deeper, you can take advantage of the resources provided in our Infobase Learning Cloud subscription which is available to all faculty, staff and students.  Just search for "windows 11" after logging in.

Note: Not all features described in these videos are available with the University's enterprise software installation, but they may be options for your personal or home installation.

Note: Windows 11 has a 15 min Lock-Screen Implementation.  After 15 min of being idle, the screen will lock and require the user to put in their pw to unlock the screen.
