Appscan: General Information

To learn about training, forms, and maintenance for the AppScan scoring machines, view these printable instructions.

Hints for a Successful Scoring Session

  • Allow plenty of room around the AppScan unit in order to feed and retrieve AppScan forms without bending them. You will also need enough room to be able to easily read the AppScan display window for important warning and maintenance messages.
  • Make sure the DataLink software is fully launched and your window is maximized before beginning to scan exams.
  • Press the red button on the AppScan unit until “Ready” appears in the display window.
  • Very Important: Before scanning your exams and after already sending through your key, pause and check both the AppScan unit display window (for # keyed) and the computer monitor/DataLink screen.
  • Scroll over to make sure the number of questions/answers matches up with the number of questions on your exam. If the numbers do not match - for example, if you have 50 keyed on the AppScan machine but only 32 show up in the DataLink window - clear the machine and the DataLink session and send the key through again and recheck.
  • Use the provided dustcovers for AppScan units when not in use (dust and paper debris clog up sensors and may require earlier calibration).
  • Submit an online service request  whenever the message “recommended recalibration soon” appears in the AppScan display panel. Press [Summary Options] and verify the “# of scans since last calibration.” Please indicate this count in your computer service request.

Hints for Form Feed

  • Place the key and/or exam form on the ledge of the AppScan unit.
  • Gently tap the edge of the form with your finger until the AppScan unit “grabs” the form. Actively pushing the form toward the feed input or bending or holding onto the form may cause paper skews and scanning errors.

Hints for Rescoring Using the DataLink Software

  • Clear the DataLink session (from the top menu, choose “Session” > “New Session”).
  • Fill in the “rescore” bubble in the keyline of your key, and rerun the key and exams through the AppScan unit.
