Nursing simulation lab Laerdal documentation and instructions

Here are instructions on how to do certain functions for the SimPad and Sim Link devices in HSC 303, 304, and 307:

  • Upgrading Software on SimPad
    1. Connect to computer with USB cable (microUSB)
    2. SimPad comes up as a USB drive
    3. Drop update file in root folder of SimPad
    4. Unplug
    5. Wait for upgrade to complete, and reboot

  • Upgrading software on LinkBox
    1. Get USB thumb drive (probably needs to be formatted to FAT32)
    2. Connect USB thumb drive to computer
    3. Copy update file (same as SimPad) to the root folder of the thumb drive
    4. Power on Link Box, wait for both lights to come on solid
    5. Disconnect thumb drive from computer and plug it into the LinkBox
    6. Green power light will begin blinking as update proceeds.
    7. When green power light is solid again, update has completed
    8. Remove USB stick from Link Box

  • Troubleshooting SimPad that doesn't have the 3 right-hand icons in simluation mode
    1. Quit simulation
    2. Go into System Settings
    3. Select "Simulator" and make sure that the Link Box is selected (not standardized patient). It should have a check box next to it, and a little mannequin icon in the top right of the screen.
    4. Try simulation again

  • Troubleshooting SimPad connecting to LinkBox
    1. Reboot the device
    2. Go into System Settings
    3. Select "WiFi"
    4. Make sure "Custom Ad Hoc Network" is selected (not Default SimLink Network).
    5. Make sure custom ad hoc network name is the same as the name of the link box

  • Troubleshooting the custom ad-hoc network
  1. Connect link box to SimPad directly using an ethernet cable.
  2. Go into System Settings > Simulator and make sure the check box is on the Link Box.  Choose the Link Box called "Nursing Anne" or something like that.  Make sure you choose the one that is not called "Standardized Patient"
  3. Go into System Settings and choose "About Simulator".  If the name has not been changed to identify which bed it is for, set it to "BedX-bhXXXXXXXX".  BedX will be the bed number (ie. Bed5) and the numbers after "bh" can be left alone, as those are the Link Box identifiers.
  4. Go into System Settings > WiFi and select "Custom Ad Hoc Network"
  5. Select a name that coincides with the device numbers (e.g. bed5)
  6. Select a channel for the network that is different from the others. Available channels are 1,6,11, and anything greater than 11

A.Here are the channels assigned to each device in HSC 303:

  • BABY 20 = 1
  • BABY 21 = 36
  • BABY 22 = 11
  • The Vitalsim19 SimPad in the HSC 303 storage closet has been set to channel 161 as well.

          B. Here are the channels assigned to each device in HSC 304:

  • CHILD 18 = 6

          C. Here are the channels assigned to each device in HSC 307:

  • BED 1 = 36
  • BED 2 = 48
  • BED 3 = 40
  • BED 4 = 161
  • BED 5 = 44
  • BED 6 = 149
  • BED 7 = 153
  • BED 8 = 157
  • BED 9 = 165
  • BED 10 = 11

        7. Wait for the connection to happen from both sides

        8. Unplug the ethernet cable

        9. Go into System Settings > Simulator and make sure the LinkBox has the checkmark.   If the LinkBox does not show up, reboot the SimPad and that should allow the Link Box to show up after the reboot.

       10. Test Simulation

  • Troubleshooting no "Simulation" option in System Settings (Also, no icons on the top of the home screen for Manual/Automatic Mode)
    1. Run Updates (latest version we're using is 6.5.2)
    2. Check for activated licenses in System Settings > License
    3. Call Laerdal for a new license if necessary
    4. Reboot the device
