On occasion it may be helpful to assign a particular program to always open files with a certain extension (characters after the last "dot" in the file name). The following is a method to do this in the Windows 10 environment.
1. Right-click on a file for whose extension you want to assign the default program to be used.
2. Click Properties, then click the Change button in the "Opens with" area.
3. Click "More apps" for a dropdown list of possible programs from which to choose.
4. At the bottom of this list, there is the option to "Look for another app on this PC", which will require searching the Program Files or the Program Files (x86) directory to find an executable program.
5. To make the selection permanent, make sure the "Always use this app to open ... files" option is checked.
6. Click your program of choice and then the OK button.
7. Click the Apply or OK button in the Properties window before continuing.
Note: This setting is machine-specific. For faculty and staff, that means you only have to perform this once on your office computer. For students, that means each time you log on to a new Windows 10 University computer, you may want to change this setting for your own use.
