Login as a Local Administrator / Make Me Admin

Most academic software that you will need is available from the CedarNet 2.0 application on your University-provided computer.

However, you may occasionally want to install software on a University-owned computer that is for your use only, including drivers for your personal printer, scanner, copier, or camera. This software installation may require administrator rights to install.

Follow the instructions below to request temporary administrative authorization to install software:

To Gain Administrator Access on Windows 10/11 desktops and older Windows 10/11 laptops:

  1. Click "Start" to view the program list.
  2. Click (or search for) the "Make Me Admin" program.
  3. When the "Make Me Admin" window pops up, click "Grant Me Administrator Rights".
  4. After doing this, you will have temporary administrative rights to that computer. When prompted for an administrator's credentials, enter your CedarNet username & password.
  5. These rights will expire after 15 minutes.

To Gain Administrator Access on newer Windows 11 laptops (including Tech2Go laptops):

  1. Click "Start" to view the program list.
  2. Click (or search for) the "Administrator access" program.
  3. When the "Administrator Access" window pops up, enter the reason that you need Administrator rights (i.e. installing Adobe Acrobat) in the "Reason" box, then click "OK".
  4. Wait until a box labeled "AdminByRequest" pops up in the lower right with a countdown timer. At this point, you will have temporary administrative rights to the computer. When prompted for an administrator's credentials, enter your CedarNet username & password.
  5. These rights will expire after 15 minutes, or you can select "Finish" when done.

To Gain Administrator Access on Mac Computers:

  1. Open the "CedarNet 2.0 for Mac" application.
  2. Locate the "Make Me Admin" option, and click "Elevate Access" to initiate the process.
  3. When prompted, select "Make me an admin, please" to activate for 15 minutes.
  4. You can now install updates using your local Mac username and password.
