Hardware/Software Recommendations

Cedarville University is pleased to provide the CedarNet network, where students (on and off-campus), faculty, and staff can use their computers and mobile devices to access their Cedarville accounts and the Internet. To benefit from this access, Information Technology recommends the following computer configurations.

Note: This page addresses general recommendations.  Hardware and software recommendations for specific majors are listed further below.

Hardware Recommendations

Note: Information technology recommends that students purchase a full-featured laptop as their primary computer. The Surface 3 tablet is also an option, but most iOS tablets, Windows Surface RTs, and Chromebooks* are not suitable as a primary device.

*Chromebooks are not compatible with the Respondus LockDown Browser, which is used in conjunction with the Learning Management System (Canvas).

  • Processor:
    • PC: Any recent Intel or AMD-based chip (dual-core or higher recommended)
    • Mac: Any relatively recent Intel-based model (i3/i5 or better)
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Networking:
    • Wired: 10/100/1000 Mb Ethernet card
    • Wireless: 802.11a/g/n wireless adapter (internal or add-on card)
  • Operating System:
    • PC: Windows 10
    • Mac: 10.14 Mojave

In most cases, a computer purchased within the last three years will be sufficient for connection to Cedarville's network. If you have any questions about whether your computer meets the above requirements, you can print this page and visit your local computer store to have their staff confirm its compatibility with the network.

If you wish to purchase a new computer to bring to campus with you, Information Technology has arranged partnerships with several vendors to provide computers at a discounted rate for students, faculty, and staff. Please visit our new computer page or the Cedarville University Bookstore for more information.

Note: Students bringing a laptop to campus do not necessarily need a DVD drive on their laptop. The Information Technology Service Counter has an external DVD drive that students can use to load software. Or, if students prefer, they can purchase their own external DVD drive.
